Downloaded a video and it plays with picture but no sound? This is a known, specific issue on certain platforms — not a random glitch — and it has a clear fix.
The cause: video and audio stored as two separate files
Reddit is the platform where this happens most. Reddit’s own video system (v.redd.it) stores video and audio as two completely separate DASH streams on its servers — unlike TikTok or Instagram, which bundle picture and sound into a single file. If a downloader only grabs the video stream and skips the audio one, the result is a silent video.
Twitter/X occasionally shows the same behavior with longer videos.
How to fix it
If you download through our Reddit video downloader: the tool automatically fetches both streams and merges them with ffmpeg on the server, so the final file always has sound. Because of that merge step, the process is slower than a normal download and shows its own progress bar — that’s expected, not a stuck download.
If you used a different tool and got a silent video, it likely only grabbed the video stream. Try re-downloading that same video through our tool to get the full version with audio.
A few other reasons a video might be silent
- The original video simply has no audio — some GIF-style clips or photo slideshows on TikTok/Instagram never had an audio track to begin with; check the original post on the platform to confirm.
- The platform muted background music for regional copyright reasons — rare, but it can happen with TikTok videos using commercial music.
- Your local media player can’t read the audio track — try opening the file in a different player (like VLC) to rule out a playback issue on your device.
Still silent after downloading a Reddit video through our tool? That’s very uncommon — if it happens, the original Reddit video most likely has no audio to begin with (confirm by playing it directly on reddit.com).
