Pasted an Instagram post, Reel, or photo link and got “content not found” or a private-account error? Here’s why, and what to do about it.
Why private accounts can’t be downloaded
When an Instagram account is set to private, only people the owner has approved as followers can view its posts — even if you have a direct link. This is a limit set by Instagram itself, not a bug in the tool: no legitimate video downloader (including other major sites) can bypass this, and we deliberately don’t try to, because doing so would violate the account owner’s privacy.
Quick way to check
Open the link in a private/incognito browser window (not logged into Instagram):
- If the content loads normally → the account is public, and the error has another cause (see below).
- If Instagram asks you to log in or shows a lock icon → the account is private, and no tool can download from it.
If the account is public but it still fails
A few other causes can produce a similar-looking error:
- A carousel post (multiple photos/videos in one post) mixing photos and video — the tool grabs the first video it finds; a carousel with only photos has no video to fetch.
- An expired or malformed link — use Share → Copy link inside the Instagram app itself rather than typing it by hand.
- The post was deleted or archived (hidden from the profile).
If you actually need content from a private account
The only legitimate path is to contact the account owner and ask them to send it to you directly (via DM, or save it and share the file), or ask them to temporarily make that post public. We don’t support, and won’t build, workarounds for privacy limits — even on request.
Frequently asked
Does this happen with public Reels too? Rarely — if a clearly public Reel still errors, try re-copying the link; Reels use two URL formats (/reel/ and /reels/), both supported, but the exact link matters.
