Gimbels Department Store was a well-known American retail chain that was founded in 1887 by Adam Gimbel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The store was operated by the Gimbel family until 1986, when it was acquired by BATUS Retail Group. The company had a strong presence in major cities across the United States, with stores in New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee.

Gimbels was known for its wide selection of merchandise, conveniences, and its whimsical holiday traditions, such as its elaborate holiday window displays which drew crowds for generations. The store also had a reputation for excellent customer service and a high level of professionalism.

Gimbels became famous for the “Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade,” which was later renamed the “6abc Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade” and is one of the oldest and largest parades in the United States. The parade always commenced with a Santa Claus float for their Miracle on 34th Street Christmas movie.

Unfortunately, Gimbels Department Store was unable to compete with other retail giants and filed for bankruptcy in 1986. It is now regarded as a great loss in American retail history. However, Gimbels left a remarkable legacy of innovation, creativity, and excellence that has influenced the industry for years. The once-popular department store is still remembered fondly by many Americans who grew up shopping there.
