YouTube lets you watch videos at many resolutions but offers no official download button. This guide shows how to download YouTube videos at high quality — up to 4K — or quickly convert them to MP3 audio.

Why does downloading YouTube HD take longer than TikTok?

This is a common question. For versions 720p and above, YouTube stores the picture and sound as two separate streams to save bandwidth. To get one complete file, the tool downloads both streams and then merges them with ffmpeg on the server. This takes a few seconds to a minute depending on length — which is why the page shows a progress bar for the “downloading” and “merging” stages.

Lower-quality versions (usually 360p) already contain both picture and sound in a single stream, so they download almost instantly.

Steps to download a YouTube video

  1. Copy the link: on YouTube, tap Share → Copy link, or copy the URL from the address bar.
  2. Paste it into the tool: open the YouTube downloader, paste the link and press Download.
  3. Pick a quality: the page shows the available levels — 720p, 1080p, 2K, 4K — based on the source. Pick what you want.
  4. Follow the progress: for HD versions, wait for the bar to move from “downloading” to “merging” and the file downloads automatically.

Convert a YouTube video to MP3

If you only need the audio (music, podcast), press the MP3 audio button. The tool extracts the sound and exports a 192kbps MP3 — good enough for most listening. See also Download MP3 from TikTok and Douyin.

Which quality should you pick?

  • 1080p: the best balance of sharpness and size — fine for most needs.
  • 2K/4K: only if the source really has it and you need maximum quality; files are large.
  • MP3: when you only need audio.
