Downloading on a computer is often faster than on a phone thanks to a stable connection and a larger screen. The steps are the same on Windows and Mac, and work with Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari or Opera.
Steps to download a video on a computer
- Copy the video link: on a phone use the Share button; on the web copy the URL from the address bar.
- Open your browser and go to the right tool:
- Paste the link into the box and press Download.
- Pick a format (Video HD/4K or MP3). The file saves to your Downloads folder.
Desktop tips
- Quick transfer: copy the link on your phone and message it to yourself, then open it on the computer to paste.
- Change the save folder: in your browser settings you can choose to be asked where to save each download.
- High-quality YouTube needs the server to merge picture and sound, so it takes a little longer; a progress bar keeps you informed. Learn why in Choosing video quality: HD, 2K, 4K.
Compared to a phone?
On a computer you download faster and manage files more easily, but a phone is handy while browsing the app. See the mobile guides:
If a download fails or the video opens in a new tab instead of saving, see Fix common download errors.
